Lend a hand!
Please see the bottom of this page for upcoming volunteer opportunities!
Havenwoods is a safe and inclusive space where everyone is welcome! Volunteering helps maintain this space. It is a great way to enjoy the outdoors, preserve our natural resources, get exercise, educate others, help out the community, meet new people and so much more. If you are interested in helping out, please don’t hesitate to contact us!
Maintain Trails
Containing over six miles of trails, Havenwoods needs staff and volunteers to maintain them. You can help by adding wood chips, pruning branches, or filling in potholes. Trail maintenance is usually done during warm weather months. If this sounds like your fit, call to schedule a time and date for you or your group to come over! Remember, National Trail Day is always the first Saturday in June!
Invasive Species Removal
Reduce stress and get great exercise by helping remove invasive plants! Pulling, cutting, digging, and hauling invasive plants are all part of the job! Invasive plants are harmful to species native to Milwaukee. In the spring, tackle garlic mustard and dame’s rocket. Come summer, crown vetch, bird foot trefoil, thistles and more demand attention. Once time for fall and winter, cut down buckthorn and other shrubs!
Pick Up Litter
Picking up litter is a year-round need. Call to schedule a time for you or your group to come enjoy the outdoors and help preserve the forest by picking up some litter! Havenwoods also participates in the county-wide Great American Cleanup on the fourth Saturday of April every year.
Support the Education Program
Help others find a passion for the outdoors and science by supporting the education program. The education program includes year-round field trips and public programs. Some examples of support include, but are not limited to, caring for program animals, building exhibits, folding newsletters, and helping at festivals!
Greet Visitors
Are you a “people person?” Lend a hand by answering phones, talking with visitors, and pitch in while naturalists are teaching and leading hikes, all while making new friends! Greeters also help staff the nature center during open hours. Call for available times!
Make Festivals Happen
Without our volunteers, Havenwoods could not offer annual festivals. If you are energetic, smiling, helpful, and over age 14, please help out at our festivals; teaching crafts, demonstrating an outdoor skill, serving food, or cleaning up are some tasks that make festivals possible.
Offer Clerical/Mechanical Support
If behind the scenes work is more you, clerical or mechanical support is needed as well! Volunteers help with mailings, flyer distribution, exhibit construction, and odd jobs as needed. Let us know if you have any special skills that could support the education program.
